Finally a New Couch!

After 7 years & countless dogs, my people broke down & bought a couch (new to them)! As you have probably noticed in previous posts, us doggies did quite the number on the old couch :) Does anyone have any tips to keep this one in better shape? I have already been told that I am not allowed to lay on the back of the couch; apparently that is a cats only place. Right now they have spread out blankets on the couch until they figure out their strategy.

So how bout it, any tips? It is a suede material. Not allowing the doggies on the couch is not an option since that IS our favorite place to lay.

I personally think that all doggies should have their OWN couch to (ab)use in their very own special way. It's easy to train the dogs to use one couch but not the other, and they often take full advantage of the priviledges.

If you hit on the solution, please share! The only thing I've found that minimizes a little bit of the wear and tear is to rotate the cushions pretty regularly. My guys seem to end up in the same position/spot, which gets really worn and indented. My flipping them around, no one spot gets totally threadbare. At least not yet...

Short of a second couch just for the dogs, I use a fitted sheet to cover my couch. Mine is a 'apartment sized' couch, so a double fits, but a queen sheet should fit the longer ones. The fitted sheet stays on nicely, and is easily removed for washing and company.

Yeah! Congrats on the couch! Hey, my dog is my son so he can lay where ever he wants. I have throw blankets on our couches and they are leather. For some reason he didn't like the other couch but he LOVES mine. When we first got it, he would scratch on the cushions as he was trying to find his "spot". He didn't rub through it though. Good thing. I can't offer any advice other than keep throw blankets on em if you're going to allow them on it.

The photo of you all sleeping on the "new" couch is so sweet. Our girlz aren't allowed on the couch or bed---but they have very comfy beds ALL over the house. They don't seem to mind not being on the sofa.

We have it on good authority that humans sitting on a couch is not a good thing for the couch. You do need to get this across.

We have a nice new suede couch and a used leather couch. We were going to have a "no dogs on the suede couch" rule but that was way too hard to enforce. Plus that's the best couch for cuddling! I'd love tips myself! We do tend to throw blankets on the couch and they will naturally lay on the part where we put the blanket down so that works out pretty well.

I think there are two worlds: one where dogs are not allowed on the couch and another, where they are. Humans who live in the "Dogs-on-the-couch" part of the universe should not even start worrying about doggy wear and tear. It is what it is. Become one with with it. To paraphrase Rilke "Try to love the questions themselves, do not seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything."

A stylish, nice-looking sheet or blanket that covers the entire couch is our solution. A faux fur throw would be an upgrade I've considered, but not invested in yet :)

I just saw something in a horsey catalog that might be the answer to your problem. backinthesaddle.com has heavy duty couch covers designed for horse/dog people. "New Hope Furniture Covers" item#B96728 (size options).
